Phonak ComPilot: This article is meant to illustrate how the Plantronics MDA200 USB switch and the BT300 USB Bluetooth Adapter can be used in combination with a Phonak ComPilot to connect a hearing aid user with a desk phone or computer softphone. Note that Comfort Telecom Canada does not sell or set up Phonak devices. These devices are best sourced from and set up by a hearing care professional. The following Phonak user links are provided solely as a convenience to the reader.

The Phonak ComPilot allows wireless bluetooth connectivity with devices such as phones, televisions, laptops, mp3 players and stereos. This Phonak ComPilot link provides some guidelines on using the device, including how to pair it with a Bluetooth device. Section 5 of the Phonak ComPilot User Manual explains how to configure the device for making phone calls. (The ComPilot must be configured as a remote control by your hearing care professional).

Remote Call Control Tip: Connecting a wireless headset to a typical desk phone.

The steps involved in setting up a CS500-series or Savi W700 series wireless headset system can be found on the product description pages linked above. Before you start, please watch the Agent Training videos provided on those pages. Once you have done that, here are some additional tips:

Tip 1: Use the HANDSET PORT, not the headset port. For phones that don’t support EHS cables, if you want to enable Remote Call Control, you will need to receive and make calls by lifting the handset. Some phones do have a Headset Port, and you can connect the wireless headset to this port, and depending on your phone configuration, make and receive calls by selecting the applicable button on the PHONE. But to enable remote call control:

- Disconnect the curley HANDSET cable from the bottom of the phone

- Connect the WIRELESS HEADSET communication cable to the phone HANDSET port on the bottom of the phone (the one that the handset was previously plugged in to)

- Connect the curley HANDSET cable to the receptacle in the middle of the WIRELESS HEADSET communication cable

Now if the Wireless Headset is configured to work with your phone (see Agent Training Video referenced above), then you should be able to answer/end calls using the phone handset (you can do this simply by leaving the wireless headset connection turned on)

HL10 Position and Angle

Tip 2: To enable remote call control (so you can answer and end calls when you are away from your desk), you need to install the HL10 handset lifter on the phone. This seems simple (just connect the HL10 cable to the round port on the CS500 or Savi W700 base, and stick the HL10 on the phone under the handset). BUT this need to be done with care.

Care 1: Before you permanently stick the HL10 to your phone, position the HL10 so that it will firmly pick up and set down the handset consistently. The best position is snugged up against the top part (speaker) of the handset, so that it will tip the handset up. DO NOT position it in the middle of the handset so it picks up the whole handset.

Care 2: There is a height position on the top of the HL10 that determines how high the Handset will be lifted. Sometimes you can set this at the lowest position to just tip up the handset a little bit, so it will drop down more precisely when you end the call. However, some handsets are quite heavy, and the HL10 at that low angle may drop the handset in the midst of your call. If this happens, set the HL10 height switch to the middle or upper position so there is not so much direct downward force leveraged from the handset.

Care 3: Some phones such as the Aastra 9120 have a latch in the top handset cup, so the handset will not lift straight up from the hung-up position. It needs to be pushed forward about 1/8 of an inch before it will lift. If your phone is like this, BEFORE you stick the HL10 on securely, nudge it forward under the handset until it pushes it out of the notch. Then exercise a call-connect several times (use the ear piece call control button, or the button on the wireless system base) to make sure it picks up and sets down consistently.

Care 4: Some phones do not have a cup at the bottom of the handset cradle to stop the handset from sliding off when it is tipped up. If this presents a problem, get a bit of foam strip tape and make a barrier on the phone so the handset can’t slide off.

HL10 with remote speaker Mic

Care 5: The HL10 detects an incoming call and alerts the user through beeps in the earpiece by “hearing” the phone ring. If your phone ring volume is too low, turn it up. If the HL10 is positioned so that its built-in MIC is not positioned near enough to the phone ring speaker, connect the little remote mic (it should have been included in your HL10 package) to the HL10, and stick it on the phone over the speaker.

Single Bay Charger

1. While the base has an active link, place the guest headset into primary user’s charge cradle (this connects the headset to the base). When the base subscription light stops flashing green and yellow and remains yellow, the primary headset/user will hear a tone indicating a guest wishes to join the call.

2. Press the primary user’s call button to accept the guest headset within ten seconds. Otherwise
the request is terminated and the guest will hear an error tone in their headset.

NOTE: A “guest headset” can also be conferenced-in over-the-air. Short press the base subscription button while the base has an active link. Next, press the guest headset volume-up button until the indicator light turns on. When the base subscription LED stops flashing green and yellow and remains solid yellow, the request to join will be heard in the primary user’s headset and the primary user will have to press their call button within 10 seconds to accept the guest .

Exit a Conference Call:

Guests headsets can remain as guests through multiple calls. To remove a guest headset, press the guest headset’s call button or dock the primary user’s headset in the charge cradle. A single tone in the master headset will be heard as each guest leaves the call.

Supervisor Monitoring:

The second headset can be used for supervisor monitoring or mentoring simply by conferencing in the second set on a call, and then turning on the Mute function on the second set so the monitor’s presence will not be noticed by the primary players.

Other Accessories you might need (pictured above):

Spare Headband: The Savi W745 system is supplied with a earpiece with a set of earhooks, a headband and neck-band as wearing options. However the second headset and cradle kit is supplied only with an earhook. Order the extra headband if this your wearing preference.

Charging Bay: Although the configuration described above allows you to keep batteries for both earpieces charged at all times, for convenience you might want the off-line charging bay to mount the spare headset cradle on. That way, it is always charged, and there is no need to switch batteries whenever you want to use it.

Documentation: You can find an Agent training Video and User Documentation for the Savi W745 on our website at www.comfortcanada.com/Plantronics/savi_w745.htm.

Voyager Legend Earpiece

The Voyager Legend is designed as a follow-up to the Plantronics Voyager Pro Plus, and the Legend does what many might have though was impossible, improve on an already stellar design. In fact, the Voyager Legend offers even better call quality, a smaller size, a more comfortable fit, and a longer battery life.

.

The Plantronics Savi W440 new packaging now includes a hard carrying case, similar in size to a good eyeglasses case. This may seem like a small item, but it certainly makes your packing easier when you want to take your headset and laptop to the conference room or when traveling.

The Savi W440 has numerous audio features, including Advanced wideband audio for high definition voice quality – ideal for web conferencing, softphones and Nuance Dragon speech recognition software. The complete Savi line of wireless headsets is designed for Unified Communications applications, with specific models optimized for Microsoft Lync.

Desktop Applications:

The W440 kit used for most desktop applications consists of the AC power supply, charging base, D100 wireless USB adapter, and the WH500 earpiece with either the earhook, headband or neckband attached. Since the W440 battery has a “talk time” of about 7 hours, if you are going to be actively using the headset for an extended period, you might want to have a spare battery on hand and keep it charged with the USB charging cable included with the kit. If this is a common occurrence, then you can order a “Deluxe Charging Cradle” with spare battery (p/n 84601-01). This accessory snaps on to the charging base and includes a “charging drawer” for the spare battery.
